Relative frequency

relative frequency = bin frequency ÷ sample size

Multiply by 100 to express the result as a percentage.

Frequency density

Bin width

bin width = data range ÷ number of bins

Reasonable binning reveals structure without emphasizing random noise.

Sample size

sample size = sum of all bin frequencies

Relative frequencies should total approximately one, or 100 percent.


How to Interpret a Histogram

  2. Check bin boundaries and whether widths are equal.
