Mass versus weight

Mass measures the amount of matter present. Weight measures gravity acting upon that mass. Changing gravity changes weight, but never changes mass.

What does weight by volume mean?

It estimates mass from material density and occupied volume. Gravity can convert that mass into force. Results depend strongly on the selected density value.

Is mass the same as weight?

No, mass measures matter while weight measures gravitational force. Mass stays constant across different gravity conditions. Weight changes when local gravitational acceleration changes.

Which density should I use?

Use density matching the material's real condition. Consider temperature, moisture, grade, and packing state. Manufacturer or laboratory values provide better accuracy.

Can this calculate liquid weight?

How are container totals calculated?

The calculator multiplies material mass by container quantity. It then adds tare weight for each container. Gross weight includes both material and container mass.

What does the compaction factor do?

It multiplies the effective bulk density. Values above one represent denser packing. Values below one represent looser material packing.

How does void percentage work?

Void percentage reduces the occupied solid fraction. Larger void values lower effective bulk density. Keep the value below one hundred percent.

What does moisture percentage change?

Moisture increases the calculated material mass. It is applied after base mass calculation. Use measured moisture data whenever possible.

Can I calculate weight on Mars?

Yes, choose Mars from gravity presets. The mass remains unchanged during calculation. The displayed gravitational force becomes substantially lower.

Why are preset densities approximate?

Most materials vary by composition and environment. Bulk materials also change with packing. Presets provide convenient planning estimates, not certification.
