N is loudness in sones. LN is loudness level in phons.

Below 40 phons: N ≈ (LN / 40)2.642

This lower-level relationship is approximate. Standardized models may produce different values.

Reverse: LN = 40 + 10 log2(N)

This reverse equation applies directly at one sone or above.

Can every decibel value convert directly to sones?

No. Frequency and spectrum affect perceived loudness. Simplified results are clearly labeled.

What is one sone?

One sone is the reference loudness at 40 phons. It approximates 40 dB SPL at 1 kHz.

Why do ten extra phons double sones?

The common model uses an exponential relationship. Each ten-phon rise doubles estimated loudness.

Are dB(A) and phons identical?

No. dB(A) is a weighted sound measurement. Phons describe equal perceived loudness.

What does frequency-aware mode do?

It applies an approximate hearing-sensitivity correction. It does not replace standardized spectral analysis.

Can sones convert back to decibels?

Sones first convert into phons. The calculator then shows a 1 kHz equivalent.

Does this calculator estimate hearing risk?

No. Hearing risk also depends on exposure duration, peaks, and individual sensitivity.

Why are low-level results less exact?

Perception below 40 phons follows a different relationship. Individual differences also matter.
