USMC Selling Leave Days Calculator

Estimate eligible leave sell-back pay, taxes, SLA limits, terminal leave value, and remaining career entitlement using detailed Marine Corps separation and reenlistment scenarios.

1. Marine and pay information

Select the current 2026 table or enter an official historical rate.

Basic pay only
Use O-1E, O-2E, or O-3E only when properly entitled.
The submitted value is recalculated server-side.
Required for historical years. Exclude BAH, BAS, and special pay.

2. Leave balances and transaction

Enter half-day increments when shown on official records.

Career cap check

3. One-time SLA eligibility

Every confirmation is required before SLA days enter the estimate.

Up to 30 days
This calculator does not approve SLA. Confirm eligibility and documentation with the administration section or local IPAC.

4. Tax and deduction estimate

Adjust rates to model withholding. This is not tax advice.

Advanced
Do not enter days unless their earned-month records support exclusion treatment.

5. Sell-back versus terminal leave

Allowances apply only to the comparison, not the leave sale.

Three scenarios
Dates override this value when all three dates are entered.

6. Calculate and export

No SSN, EDIPI, bank information, or identifying data is requested.

Unofficial planning tool. LES, MOL, orders, law, DFAS processing, and the servicing IPAC determine actual entitlement and payment.

Formula used

Daily basic-pay rate = Monthly basic pay ÷ 30 Eligible sale days = lesser of requested days, available balance, and remaining career limit Gross leave payment = Eligible sale days × Daily basic-pay rate Taxable payment = Gross payment − qualifying CZTE amount Estimated net = Gross − federal − state − FICA − additional withholding − other deductions − debt offsets

Basic pay drives the leave settlement. BAH, BAS, incentive pay, bonuses, and special pay do not increase the sell-back amount.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the component, grade, and creditable service shown by official records.
  2. Use the exact 2026 table or enter an official historical monthly basic-pay amount.
  3. Enter ordinary leave, approved SLA, planned terminal leave, and previously sold career days.
  4. Select the personnel transaction and separation characterization that fit the case.
  5. Complete every SLA confirmation only when documentation supports it.
  6. Enter CZTE days only when earned-month records support the exclusion.
  7. Adjust withholding rates and known government debt or collection amounts.
  8. Add BAH, BAS, and continuing special pay only for terminal-leave comparison.
  9. Calculate, review warnings, then download the CSV or PDF summary.
  10. Take the report to the administration section or IPAC for official verification.

Understanding Marine leave sell-back planning

Use basic pay, not total compensation

A leave settlement is modeled from monthly basic pay. Housing, subsistence, bonuses, and special pays are excluded. The calculator keeps those amounts outside the sale formula. It uses them only when comparing terminal leave. This separation prevents an inflated sell-back estimate.

Check the career limit before choosing days

Previously sold leave matters. Enter the career total from reliable records. The calculator subtracts that amount from the normal sixty-day limit. It then checks requested days against the remaining entitlement and current balance. Excess days appear as rejected days.

Treat SLA as a documented exception

Special Leave Accrual requires more than a large leave balance. The page asks whether SLA was approved, whether qualifying leave would otherwise be lost, whether the one-time election was already used, and whether the Marine belongs to an eligible component. These controls reduce accidental inclusion.

Separate tax exemption from withholding

Combat-zone leave requires earned-month records. Enter only the days supported by those records. The calculator separates an estimated tax-exempt amount from taxable gross pay. Commissioned-officer exclusions can be capped. FICA is shown separately because income-tax exclusion and payroll-tax treatment are different questions.

Compare cash with time

Selling leave creates a lump-sum basic-pay value. Taking terminal leave may continue monthly basic pay and selected allowances. It can also permit civilian earnings during approved leave. The comparison therefore shows three scenarios: sell all eligible days, take all days as terminal leave, or use the entered hybrid plan.

Verify every result

The report is a planning worksheet. It cannot inspect MOL, an LES, orders, prior settlements, debt records, tax elections, or command approval. Provide the exported summary to the servicing administration office. Official systems and authorities control the final payment.

Frequently asked questions

Does BAH increase sold-leave value?

No. The sale estimate uses basic pay only. BAH is available solely for terminal-leave comparison.

Can I sell more than sixty career days?

The calculator applies the normal sixty-day career limit. Verify any statutory exception with IPAC.

Can officers use the one-time SLA option?

The referenced Marine Corps guidance limits that election to qualifying enlisted Marines.

Why can I enter half-days?

Military leave balances may include half-day increments. The calculator preserves those increments.

Are taxes exact?

No. They are adjustable withholding estimates. Final tax liability depends on the complete tax return.

What happens with government debt?

The entered debt offset reduces estimated net payment dollar for dollar.

Does terminal leave require approval?

Yes. This tool compares values but cannot approve leave or confirm continued entitlements.

Where should I verify the result?

Check the LES and MOL, then contact the administration section or local IPAC.
