Understanding tire markings

A code like 225/45R17 identifies three key dimensions. The first number gives section width in millimeters. The second number gives sidewall height as a percentage.

The letter R identifies radial construction. The final number identifies wheel diameter in inches. Optional numbers and letters show load and speed ratings.

Plus sizing and wheel changes

Plus sizing uses a larger wheel with a shorter sidewall. The goal is preserving nearly the same overall diameter. This maintains speedometer accuracy and reduces clearance changes.

Wheel width and offset also change physical placement. A wider wheel may move both inner and outer edges. Offset determines how that extra width is distributed.

Important installation checks

Many installers target a difference near three percent or less. Vehicle systems and available clearance may require tighter limits.

Can I use a wider tire?

Why does speedometer error occur?

A larger tire travels farther during each revolution. The vehicle may therefore move faster than the indicated speed.
