Formula Used
Compressed audio: file size = bitrate × duration ÷ 8. Bitrate uses kilobits per second. Metadata and artwork are added afterwards.
Uncompressed audio: file size = sample rate × bit depth × channels × duration ÷ 8. Lossless formats multiply that result by the chosen compression ratio. This provides a practical planning estimate.
Songs that fit: usable storage ÷ average song size. The calculator rounds down to whole files. Reserved space and overhead reduce capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many songs fit in one GB?
It depends on bitrate, duration, format, and metadata. A typical 192 kbps library may hold roughly 185 songs. Longer tracks reduce the final count.
Why does bitrate change storage use?
Higher bitrate stores more audio data each second. This usually improves quality but increases file size. Fewer songs then fit in storage.
What is the difference between GB and GiB?
A decimal GB contains one billion bytes. A GiB contains 1,073,741,824 bytes. The selected storage system changes capacity estimates.
Does stereo double compressed file size?
Not when bitrate already describes the complete stream. A 192 kbps stereo file remains 192 kbps overall. Channels matter directly for PCM calculations.
How are FLAC and ALAC estimated?
The calculator first finds uncompressed PCM size. It then applies the selected lossless compression ratio. Actual music complexity can change results.
Why include metadata and album art?
Tags and embedded images consume additional storage. Large artwork can noticeably affect short compressed tracks. The allowance improves practical accuracy.
What does file-system overhead mean?
Drives cannot always use every advertised byte. Formatting and allocation structures consume some capacity. The overhead setting reserves that difference.
Can this estimate podcasts and audiobooks?
Yes, enter their average episode or chapter duration. Select the relevant bitrate and storage amount. Playback totals will update automatically.
What is mixed-library mode?
It combines compressed, lossless, and uncompressed shares. Each share contributes to a weighted average size. Percentages are normalised before calculation.
Why is the practical estimate rounded?
Real libraries contain tracks with different lengths. Variable bitrate also changes individual file sizes. Rounded results are easier for planning.
