Formula used

EU and US shoe sizes do not share one universal equation. This calculator uses category-specific reference tables, then selects the nearest available size. Foot length uses the practical estimate shown below.

Estimated EU size = (foot length in centimeters + 1.5) × 1.5
Recommended US size = chart US size + fit adjustments

Brand, width, shoe type, fit preference, and growth allowance can change the recommendation. These adjustments are estimates rather than manufacturer guarantees. Always compare the final result with the exact product chart.

EU and US shoe sizing guide

European shoe sizing normally uses Paris points. One Paris point equals two-thirds of a centimeter. However, labeled shoe sizes represent the inside last, not an exact foot measurement.

US sizing differs by category. A US men’s size and women’s size with the same number are not equivalent. Children’s numbering also restarts after size thirteen, which can confuse direct comparisons.

Measure feet while standing near the day’s end. Wear the socks normally used with that shoe type. Use the larger foot when two measurements differ.

Running shoes often need extra toe space. Hiking footwear may need room for thicker socks. Dress shoes can fit more closely because their materials and shapes differ.

Width matters as much as length. A longer shoe does not always solve pressure caused by a narrow toe box. Select wide footwear when the forefoot feels compressed.

Brand labels are not perfectly standardized. Two shoes with identical printed sizes can have noticeably different internal lengths. Product lines from one brand can also fit differently.

Children need enough space for natural movement. Excessive extra length can still cause slipping and poor support. Recheck growing feet regularly rather than buying overly large shoes.

This calculator provides a practical starting point. Try the recommended size and the two adjacent half sizes when possible. Final comfort remains the most reliable fitting test.

Online buyers should inspect return policies before ordering. Read model-specific reviews for comments about narrow, wide, short, or long fit. Manufacturer measurements should take priority whenever available.

Frequently asked questions

Is EU 42 always US men’s 9?

It is a common approximation, but some brands label EU 42 as US 8.5 or 9.5. Check the product chart.

What is EU 39 in US women’s sizing?

EU 39 commonly converts to about US women’s 8.5. Brand construction can shift the result slightly.

How do unisex shoe sizes work?

Many unisex shoes use US men’s sizing. Women often add about 1.5 sizes for an approximate equivalent.

Should I measure both feet?

Yes. Feet commonly differ slightly. Choose the size that comfortably fits the larger foot.

Why does the calculator include brand adjustments?

Brands use different lasts, toe shapes, and internal dimensions. The adjustment offers practical comparison guidance.

Should running shoes be larger?

Many runners prefer extra toe room, often about half a US size. Personal fit still matters.

Does shoe width change the size?

Width does not officially change length, but a wider recommendation may improve comfort when wide versions are unavailable.

How much growth room should children have?

A modest allowance is useful. Too much space can create slipping, instability, and unnecessary friction.

Can I convert from foot length directly?

Yes. Measure heel to longest toe, select centimeters or inches, and choose the relevant category.

Are half sizes exact?

No. Half sizes are nominal increments, and their internal length varies among manufacturers and shoe models.

Which size should I choose between two results?

Choose based on width, intended socks, activity, and preferred fit. Trying both sizes gives the best answer.
