Use zero to apply month and day fields.

Batch Decoder and Comparison

Up to 250 codes are decoded, sorted by date, and checked for duplicates.

Formula Used

Julian date codes convert a year and day number into a calendar date. The calculator starts at January first, then adds one less than the Julian day. Leap years allow day 366 when the selected year supports it.

Calendar date = January 1 of decoded year + (Julian day − 1)
Pack age in days = Today − Manufacturing date
Estimated freshness date = Manufacturing date + Adjusted freshness period

How to Use

Enter the printed code exactly as shown on the pack. Select known manufacturer details, then choose Auto detect for broad matching. Review alternatives whenever the calculator reports an ambiguous result.

  1. Find the inkjet, laser, stamped, or printed traceability code.
  2. Enter the code without removing leading zeros.
  3. Set a practical year range and preferred date format.
  4. Use manual fields when documented manufacturer instructions exist.
  5. Check the confidence level before relying on the result.

Supported Formats and Limitations

This calculator tests common calendar, Julian, week, and letter-month patterns. Manufacturer codes may also include private factory, machine, shift, or traceability rules. Confirm important results against current manufacturer or distributor documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every cigarette pack code a date?

No. Some codes identify factories, machines, batches, shifts, or traceability records.

What does Julian day 001 mean?

It represents January 1 of the decoded production year.

Can a Julian code contain day 366?

Yes, but only when the decoded year is a leap year.

Why are multiple dates shown?

Short year codes and six-digit calendar patterns can match several interpretations.

Does the calculator confirm an expiry date?

No. The freshness date is a user-defined estimate, not an official expiry.

What should I do when no format matches?

Try Auto detect, widen the year range, or use manufacturer documentation.

Why are leading zeros important?

They may identify fixed-width days, months, years, or production segments.

Can I decode a full carton?

Yes. Paste carton and pack codes into the batch decoder for comparison.

Is OCR always accurate?

No. Blurred printing, glare, low contrast, and curved packaging reduce accuracy.

Can manufacturer rules change?

Yes. Packaging, factories, markets, and traceability requirements can change formats.

What does confidence mean?

It measures pattern strength, date validity, ambiguity, and selected constraints.
