Understanding adjusted BMI after amputation
Standard BMI divides body weight by height squared. Limb loss reduces measured body weight. Standard BMI may therefore understate a comparable intact-body value. An adjustment estimates the weight represented by missing segments. That estimated value enters the usual BMI formula.
The process starts with observed biological weight. Known prosthetic weight is removed from the scale reading. Selected segment percentages are added together. Biological weight is divided by the remaining body-mass fraction. This creates an estimated intact-equivalent weight.
Why percentages need careful review
Body-segment percentages come from population estimates. They are not exact for every individual. Age, sex, muscularity, body shape, and residual length affect accuracy. Partial amputations can differ greatly from complete disarticulations. Published charts may group amputation levels differently.

Handling prostheses

Keep measurement conditions similar over time. Clothing and time of day can affect results. Fluid status can change measured weight. Meals may temporarily alter scale readings. Store these conditions in the notes field.
Interpreting adjusted BMI
BMI is a screening measurement. It does not directly measure body fat. It cannot describe muscle distribution or fluid retention. Adjusted BMI adds another estimation layer. A single value should not determine treatment.
Clinical assessment may include intake, weight history, laboratory findings, function, wound healing, muscle stores, and medical conditions. Other body-composition methods may help. Their suitability depends on equipment and amputation level.
Using target ranges responsibly
The calculator displays a mathematical adult healthy-BMI range. It translates that range into biological observed weight. It can also add known prosthesis weight. These values are references, not prescribed goals. Individual targets may differ significantly.
Children need age-specific growth references. Pregnancy needs specialized interpretation. Older adults require broader context. Athletes may have higher BMI from muscle. Edema can make weight-based estimates less reliable.
