Understanding adjusted BMI after amputation

Standard BMI divides body weight by height squared. Limb loss reduces measured body weight. Standard BMI may therefore understate a comparable intact-body value. An adjustment estimates the weight represented by missing segments. That estimated value enters the usual BMI formula.

The process starts with observed biological weight. Known prosthetic weight is removed from the scale reading. Selected segment percentages are added together. Biological weight is divided by the remaining body-mass fraction. This creates an estimated intact-equivalent weight.

Why percentages need careful review

Body-segment percentages come from population estimates. They are not exact for every individual. Age, sex, muscularity, body shape, and residual length affect accuracy. Partial amputations can differ greatly from complete disarticulations. Published charts may group amputation levels differently.
