Seed and Planting Costs

Formula Used

Usable length = Field length − borders − walkways − headlands − section gaps
Usable width = Field width − borders − walkways − central path − access lanes
Rows = Simulated row positions across the usable cross-span
Plants per row = Floor(Row length ÷ Plant spacing) + 1
Raw seeds = Planting positions × Seeds per position
Adjusted seeds = Raw seeds ÷ (Germination rate × Survival rate)
Purchased seeds = Adjusted seeds × replacement × wastage × safety allowances
Seasonal seeds = Purchased seeds × Succession plantings
Density = Planting positions ÷ Usable planting area

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the complete field dimensions first. Choose one shared measurement unit. Add borders, headlands, and excluded space carefully.

Select the row arrangement and direction. Enter crop spacing from reliable growing guidance. Add paths needed for safe access and maintenance.

Include germination, survival, and purchasing allowances. Add optional costs and infrastructure details. Submit the form and review every warning shown.

Worked Example

A garden measures twenty metres by ten metres. Rows use seventy-five-centimetre spacing. Tomato plants use thirty-centimetre spacing within each row.

Paths appear after every sixth row. Each path measures sixty centimetres wide. Germination and survival losses increase the seed requirement.

The calculator compares both principal row directions. It selects the larger practical planting capacity. Costs remain optional for early planning stages.

InputExample valuePurpose
Field size20 m × 10 mDefines gross planting space.
Row spacing0.75 mControls row quantity.
Plant spacing0.30 mControls plants per row.
Path plan0.60 m after six rowsPreserves access space.
Germination90%Adjusts seed purchasing.

Planting Guidance

Spacing

Use mature plant width when choosing spacing. Dense planting can restrict airflow and access. Wider spacing may improve maintenance and disease control.

Direction

North–south rows often distribute sunlight more evenly. East–west rows may suit slopes or windbreaks. Field drainage should influence the final direction choice.

Germination and survival

Packet germination rates may differ from field results. Weather and soil conditions affect survival. Keep replacement plants for important or expensive crops.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does automatic direction work?

The calculator tests rows along both dimensions. It compares complete planting positions. The larger result becomes the recommended principal direction.

Does staggered planting increase capacity?

Staggered rows offset alternate planting positions. Capacity may change slightly near row ends. Crop growth habits still determine safe practical spacing.

How are double and triple rows calculated?

Rows repeat inside grouped planting bands. Intra-group spacing controls nearby row separation. Main spacing separates one group from the next.

Can I plan raised beds?

Yes, use each bed as one planting area. Add border clearance for bed edges. Section gaps can represent spaces between separate bed sections.

How are regular paths counted?

A path is inserted after your selected row interval. Its width consumes cross-span space. Final row quantity reflects those repeated access gaps.

What does excluded area mean?

It represents obstacles or unusable irregular ground. The percentage reduces estimated planting positions. It does not reshape the visual field boundary.

How are seed losses handled?

Germination and survival rates divide the raw requirement. Replacement and wastage allowances increase purchasing needs. Safety allowance provides another optional planning buffer.

Can I calculate alternating crops?

Yes, assign row shares to three crops. Each crop may use different plant spacing. Row totals are divided using the selected percentages.

What does companion mode assume?

Every selected crop shares every complete row. Each crop keeps its own spacing. Confirm real companion compatibility before using this estimate.

How is irrigation line length estimated?

Total row length multiplies by lines per row. Headers and connectors are not included. Add installation waste before purchasing irrigation materials.

Can the custom angle be exact?

The custom-angle result uses a geometric area approximation. Boundary row lengths vary in real fields. Mark the layout onsite before final purchasing.
