Depth recommendations vary with climate, plants, and material texture. Excess mulch can trap moisture against trunks and crowns. Leave visible clearance around stems to support healthier growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should mulch usually be?

Many beds use two to four inches of mulch. Fine materials often need less depth than coarse materials. Always follow plant-specific and local landscaping guidance before installation.

Should existing mulch be removed first?

Healthy existing mulch can often remain after light loosening. Remove compacted, mouldy, contaminated, or heavily decomposed material first. Measure the remaining layer before calculating the additional depth.

Why include a waste allowance?

Waste covers spillage, uneven ground, and measurement uncertainty. Five to ten percent suits many ordinary landscape projects. Complex borders may require a larger carefully considered allowance.

What does the compaction allowance represent?

Loose mulch settles after placement, rain, and foot traffic. The allowance increases ordered volume to protect the target depth. Material texture strongly affects the final amount of settling.

How does the calculator handle multiple beds?

Each bed receives its own shape and dimensions. The calculator subtracts exclusions and multiplies identical area counts. All net areas combine before depth and volume calculations.

Can circular beds use diameter?

Yes, choose diameter from the circle measurement selector. The calculator divides diameter by two before using pi. This conversion produces the radius required by the formula.

Why are bag counts rounded upward?

Retailers normally sell complete bags rather than partial bags. Upward rounding ensures the calculated project has enough material. The result also reports estimated excess after purchasing.

How are bulk loads calculated?

Required volume is divided by your entered load capacity. The exact result shows fractional delivery loads for comparison. Purchasing loads are rounded upward to complete delivery quantities.

Does reverse mode include waste?

Reverse mode treats entered volume as available loose material. Waste is not removed from that entered volume automatically. Add your own reduction before entering uncertain usable quantities.

Can this calculator estimate stone coverage?

Yes, select gravel or stone as the material. Enter the depth recommended for your aggregate and application. Weight and delivery limits still require separate supplier confirmation.

Are cost estimates final quotations?

No, they are planning estimates from entered prices. Supplier minimums, delivery zones, and seasonal pricing can differ. Request a written quotation before ordering substantial project quantities.
