How to Use This Calculator
Choose the lawn shape and enter accurate dimensions. Remove patios, beds, and other untreated surfaces. Add overlap only when your spreading method requires it.
Select granular or liquid fertilizer mode. Enter the product label information exactly as printed. Use a soil test when choosing nutrient rates.
Review the calculated purchase amount before buying fertilizer. Round packages upward because partial bags may be unavailable. Always follow label directions and local restrictions.
Example Data
| Example | Lawn area | N-P-K | Nitrogen rate | Applications | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small cool-season lawn | 2,000 sq ft | 20-5-10 | 1.0 lb/1,000 sq ft | 4 | General seasonal feeding |
| Phosphorus-free plan | 5,000 sq ft | 24-0-11 | 0.75 lb/1,000 sq ft | 3 | Maintenance after soil testing |
| Liquid treatment | 3,000 sq ft | Label-specific | 6 fl oz concentrate | 2 | Foliar or quick-release application |
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the first N-P-K number mean?
It shows the product's nitrogen percentage by weight. A 20-5-10 fertilizer contains twenty percent nitrogen.
Why calculate nitrogen instead of total fertilizer?
Most turf recommendations are expressed as nitrogen rates. Product quantity changes with the fertilizer's nitrogen concentration.
Should patios and flower beds be excluded?
Yes. Excluding untreated surfaces prevents overbuying and reduces accidental fertilizer application beyond the lawn.
How much nitrogen is safe per application?
Many lawns use no more than one pound per 1,000 square feet. Turf species, climate, and product labels may require less.
When should phosphorus be used?
Use phosphorus when soil testing or establishment needs justify it. Some locations restrict phosphorus-containing lawn fertilizers.
What is slow-release nitrogen?
Slow-release nitrogen becomes available gradually. It can support steadier growth and lower the risk of rapid burn.
Why include overlap and waste?
Spreaders may overlap passes and leave small handling losses. Modest allowances create a more practical purchase estimate.
Can this calculator estimate liquid fertilizer?
Yes. Enter concentrate rate, dilution ratio, tank capacity, container size, and price for liquid planning.
Does bag coverage replace nutrient calculations?
No. Label coverage is useful for comparison, but nutrient rate determines whether the lawn receives the intended nitrogen amount.
Is the result a professional recommendation?
No. It is a planning estimate. Product labels, soil tests, local rules, and qualified advice take priority.
