Understanding megawatts, kilowatts, and energy estimates
Megawatts and kilowatts measure power
A watt is the standard unit of power. Power describes how quickly energy is produced, transferred, or consumed. A kilowatt equals one thousand watts, while a megawatt equals one million watts. Because one million divided by one thousand equals one thousand, every megawatt contains exactly one thousand kilowatts. The conversion is therefore linear and does not depend on equipment type, voltage, current, location, or operating time.
Power is different from energy
Megawatts and kilowatts are power units. Megawatt-hours and kilowatt-hours are energy units. A power rating tells you the instantaneous rate at which a machine can generate or consume energy. An energy value adds a duration. For example, a one-megawatt generator running at full output for one hour produces one megawatt-hour, which is equal to one thousand kilowatt-hours. The energy estimator on this page multiplies power by time and then applies a capacity factor.
Capacity factor improves real-world estimates
Equipment rarely operates at maximum output during every available hour. Maintenance, weather, demand, fuel supply, curtailment, and operating schedules can reduce actual production. Capacity factor represents the average output as a percentage of rated output over a period. A five-megawatt system with a forty percent capacity factor has an average effective output of two megawatts during the selected time period. The estimator uses this adjusted power when calculating daily, monthly, and yearly energy.
Rounding and precision
The exact MW-to-kW factor is 1,000, so ordinary conversions do not introduce approximation. Rounding becomes useful when converting through non-decimal units such as mechanical horsepower or BTU per hour. Decimal-place controls determine the displayed precision. Significant figures are helpful when the original measurement has limited accuracy. Scientific and engineering notation make extremely large or small results easier to read without changing their mathematical value.
Cost and revenue calculations
Electricity cost or revenue is estimated by multiplying energy in kilowatt-hours by a price per kilowatt-hour. The resulting figure is a simplified estimate. Real bills and project revenues may include demand charges, time-of-use pricing, taxes, transmission fees, power-purchase agreements, minimum charges, export limits, losses, or tiered rates.
