Formula Used

Scale factor: drawing length ÷ actual length.

Drawing length: actual length × scale factor.

Actual length: drawing length ÷ scale factor.

Scale conversion: old drawing × new factor ÷ old factor.

Area factor: k². Volume factor: k³.

What does a 1:50 scale mean?

One drawing unit represents fifty real units. Two centimetres therefore represent one metre. Matching units must be used before comparison.

How do I calculate an unknown scale?

Divide the drawing measurement by the actual measurement. Convert both values into matching units first. The calculator simplifies the resulting ratio automatically.

Can this calculator handle enlargement scales?

Yes, scales such as 2:1 are supported. Their factors are greater than one. Results are marked as enlargement calculations.

How is area affected by scaling?

Area changes by the square of the factor. A factor of two creates four times area. A half factor creates one-quarter area.

How is volume affected by scaling?

Volume changes by the cube of the factor. Doubling dimensions creates eight times the volume. Halving dimensions creates one-eighth volume.
