Understanding liters and kilograms
Liters measure volume. Kilograms measure mass. They describe different physical properties, so no universal one-to-one conversion exists. A liter of water and a liter of honey occupy equal volume. Their masses differ because honey is denser. The calculator connects these measurements by using density. Density states how much mass fits inside a given volume.
The conversion formula
The main formula is mass equals volume multiplied by density. When volume is in liters and density is in kilograms per liter, the result is kilograms. For example, five liters of a liquid with density 0.92 kilograms per liter weighs 4.6 kilograms. Reverse conversion divides mass by density. Ten kilograms of the same liquid occupies about 10.87 liters.
Why density values vary
Density can change with temperature, pressure, concentration, moisture, packing, and product formulation. Liquids usually expand as they warm, lowering density. Dry materials behave differently because bulk density includes gaps between particles. Flour may be loose, scooped, shaken, or compacted. Each method changes how much flour fits into one liter. Construction materials show similar variation.
Using temperature adjustment
The optional temperature adjustment estimates density at a different temperature. It uses a simple volumetric expansion model. This model is suitable for rough calculations, not precision engineering. Choose a preset with a known reference temperature, enable temperature adjustment, and enter the working temperature. The calculator displays both the reference density and adjusted density.
Choosing custom density
Use custom density when a supplier, safety data sheet, laboratory report, or engineering specification provides a verified value. Select the matching density unit before calculating. Kilograms per cubic meter must be divided by one thousand to become kilograms per liter. Grams per milliliter and grams per cubic centimeter are numerically equal to kilograms per liter.
Working with dry ingredients
Dry ingredient conversions are estimates because measured volume depends on particle size and packing. For recipes, a kitchen scale is more reliable. For shipping, procurement, and construction, use a supplier-specific bulk density. Moisture can increase mass substantially. The preset database identifies dry materials as bulk-density values.

Frequently asked questions
How many kilograms are in one liter?
It depends on density. One liter of water is about one kilogram. One liter of oil is usually less. One liter of honey is usually more.
Is one liter always equal to one kilogram?
No. That shortcut only approximates water under ordinary conditions. Other substances require their own density values.
What density unit should I use?
Kilograms per liter is simplest. The calculator also accepts grams per milliliter, kilograms per cubic meter, pounds per cubic foot, and other units.
Can I convert kilograms back to liters?
Yes. Switch to kilograms-to-liters mode. The calculator divides mass by the selected or custom density.
Why does temperature change the result?
Many materials expand when heated. The same mass occupies more volume, so density falls. The included adjustment is an estimate.
Are flour and sugar conversions exact?
No. Their bulk density changes with packing, grain size, humidity, and measuring technique. Weighing is better for accurate recipes.

Does the calculator work offline?
After the page and its service worker are cached, core calculations can work offline on supported browsers and secure connections.
What does significant figures mode do?
It rounds the result to a selected number of meaningful digits instead of a fixed number of decimal places.

Yes. The share button creates a URL containing the current inputs. Anyone opening it can reproduce the same setup.

Results are estimates when preset densities are used. Exact mass can change with temperature, pressure, moisture, concentration, composition, particle size, packing, and measurement technique.
