Understanding kilograms, gallons, and density
Why density is required
A kilogram is a unit of mass. A gallon is a unit of volume. Two substances can have the same mass while occupying very different volumes. Ten kilograms of honey occupies less space than ten kilograms of gasoline because honey is denser. The calculator therefore needs a density value that links mass and volume.
Density is commonly written as kilograms per liter, grams per milliliter, kilograms per cubic meter, or pounds per gallon. The calculator normalizes these choices to kilograms per liter before doing the final conversion.
US and imperial gallons are different
The US liquid gallon is smaller than the UK imperial gallon. A result labeled only “gallons” can therefore be ambiguous. This calculator always shows the selected gallon standard and also displays US, imperial, and dry-gallon comparisons.
Temperature can change volume
Many liquids expand as temperature rises, which lowers their density. Petroleum products and liquefied gases can change enough that temperature compensation matters in inventory, transport, and billing. Water behaves unusually near its freezing point, so a simple linear model is not suitable for every condition.
The optional correction here is intentionally approximate. For regulated trade, aviation, laboratory, engineering, or safety work, use an approved density-temperature table or measured density at the operating temperature.
Dry materials need bulk density
For grains, powders, soil, pellets, and similar materials, use bulk density rather than the intrinsic density of the solid particles. Packing, moisture, particle size, and compaction can all change the gallons occupied by a given mass.
