For standard half-up rounding, a thousandths digit from zero through four leaves the hundredths digit unchanged. A digit from five through nine increases the hundredths digit by one. Carrying continues into the tenths or integer places when needed.

Understanding decimal rounding

Rounding creates a shorter value that stays close to the original number. The hundredths place is the second digit after the decimal point. The thousandths place decides whether that digit changes.

Consider 18.376 under standard half-up rounding. The hundredths digit is seven, while the thousandths digit is six. Six triggers an increase, producing the final value 18.38.

Negative values use the same digit test during ordinary rounding. Therefore, -2.347 becomes -2.35 because seven triggers an increase in magnitude. Directional methods behave differently because ceiling and floor follow number-line direction.

Ceiling always moves toward positive infinity when discarded digits exist. Floor always moves toward negative infinity under the same condition. Truncation simply removes extra digits without considering their values.

Half-even rounding reduces repeated midpoint bias in large datasets. An exact midpoint moves toward the nearest result with an even last digit. Half-down instead keeps exact midpoint values closer to zero.

Formatting does not alter the mathematical result. Showing trailing zeros makes 12 display as 12.00 for financial or measured values. Removing zeros presents the shorter form 12 without changing its value.
