Formula used
The standard mathematical relationship treats one quarter credit as two-thirds of one semester credit. Therefore, quarter hours are multiplied by two and divided by three. The reverse conversion multiplies semester hours by one and one-half.
These formulas describe the numerical equivalence between calendar systems. They do not guarantee that every course will transfer. A receiving institution may consider content, accreditation, grade, residency rules, course age, level, and program applicability.

The GPA section is optional. It calculates a separate transfer-course GPA from accepted letter-graded courses. A combined estimate is available, but it should not be treated as an official institutional GPA.
Understanding quarter credit hours
A quarter calendar commonly divides the academic year into shorter instructional periods. Students may complete three main quarters during a traditional academic year, with an optional summer term. Because the periods are shorter, a typical course often carries more numerical quarter credits than its semester-system equivalent.
For example, a five-quarter-credit course is commonly treated as approximately 3.333 semester credits before institutional rounding. A fifteen-quarter-credit load converts to ten semester credits. The numerical difference does not mean the quarter course contains less learning. It reflects a different method of measuring instructional time.
Understanding semester credit hours
A semester calendar commonly uses two main instructional periods during the academic year. Individual courses often carry three semester credits, though laboratories, studios, clinical courses, internships, and accelerated classes may use other values.
When semester credits are converted to quarter credits, the calculator multiplies by 1.5. A three-semester-credit course becomes 4.5 quarter credits. A thirty-semester-credit academic year becomes forty-five quarter credits.
Transfer-credit policies that can change the result
Mathematical conversion is only one part of a transfer evaluation. Schools may set a maximum number of transferable credits. They may require a minimum grade, reject developmental coursework, limit vocational credit, or refuse courses that do not match the destination program.
Some institutions evaluate each course separately and round every result. Others total the converted values before rounding. This difference can create a small variation across a long transcript. The calculator supports both approaches so you can model the policy that best matches the receiving school.
Residency requirements can also matter. A student may possess enough total credits for a degree but still need to complete a minimum number at the awarding institution. This calculator reports numerical progress only. It does not determine residency, upper-division, major, general-education, or accreditation compliance.
Rounding guidance
No rounding preserves the full floating-point result used by PHP. Decimal rounding uses standard half-up rounding at your selected precision. Whole-credit rounding is useful for rough planning. Always-round-down and always-round-up options model conservative or generous institutional policies.
For an official transcript review, use the receiving institution’s published method. A course worth five quarter hours converts exactly to 3.333333 semester hours. One school may record 3.33. Another may award 3.3 or three whole credits. That difference can affect program totals when many courses are involved.
