Frequently asked questions
What does exposed perimeter mean?
It is the coated boundary around a section. The calculator multiplies it by coated member length. End faces remain optional for every listed steel member.
Are section corner radii included?
Standard calculations use sharp-corner geometric dimensions. Rolled radii can slightly change actual surface area. Apply a correction factor when precise mill data exists.
Can hollow sections include internal surfaces?
Yes, select internal and external exposure. The internal perimeter uses the entered wall thickness. Confirm whether internal coating is practically accessible before estimating.
How are end faces calculated?
End faces use the section material area. Two ends are included when the option remains checked. Hollow sections use their outer area minus void area.
How should embedded steel be entered?
Enter the uncoated embedded length within each item. That length is removed before perimeter area calculation. Separate hidden contact areas can also be deducted globally.
Does the paint estimate include losses?
Yes, waste and transfer losses are adjustable. Preparation allowance can cover extra material consumed during work. Compare final quantities with the coating manufacturer's instructions.
Can I enter a manufacturer area factor?
Yes, select the custom section option. Enter an exposed perimeter and end material area. You may also apply the global dimensional correction factor.
Why might actual paint use differ?
Surface roughness and application methods affect consumption. Overspray, weather, access, and worker technique also matter. Always retain a practical project contingency before purchasing materials.
Can the report support estimating records?
The schedule can be copied or downloaded. CSV supports further checking in spreadsheet software. PDF creates a concise record for project documentation.
