Measuring Wall Areas
Measure every elevation independently. Record width and height at several points. Use the largest practical dimensions when walls are uneven. Separate parapets, returns, pilasters, and recessed sections.
Handling Openings
Enter doors, windows, vents, and other exclusions separately. Small penetrations may be ignored when site practice requires full surrounding coverage. Large openings should always be deducted.
Choosing Waste
Use five percent for simple panel layouts. Ten percent suits most rectangular projects. Fifteen percent helps with corners, mixed sizes, and frequent cuts. Irregular natural stone may require twenty percent or more.
Corner Pieces
Measure external and internal corners in linear units. Corner products often have different packaging and pricing. Avoid converting corner length directly into flat wall area unless the supplier specifies an equivalent.
Adhesive Coverage
Coverage depends on substrate flatness, trowel size, stone back profile, and installation method. Reduce nominal coverage when walls are uneven or stone backs are deeply textured.
Mortar and Grout
Jointed systems require setting mortar and pointing mortar. Dry-stack systems usually require less pointing material. Always include additional material for scratch coats, keying, and site losses.
Mechanical Fixings
Large panels may need rails, anchors, clips, or brackets. Fastener spacing should follow engineering and manufacturer documentation. This calculator estimates quantity but does not design structural attachments.
Installed Weight
Installed weight includes stone, mortar, grout, membranes, rails, and fixings. Confirm substrate capacity and support details. Heavy cladding often needs foundation ledges or engineered support systems.
Labor Productivity
Productivity falls on high walls, congested elevations, detailed corners, and intricate patterns. Include setup, cutting, cleanup, moving materials, and scaffold access.
Packaging
Suppliers sell products by boxes, bundles, pallets, bags, buckets, tubes, and rolls. Order quantities must be rounded upward. Leftovers are useful for future repairs and color matching.
Surface Preparation
Clean, stable, and correctly detailed substrates are essential. Include backer board, lath, scratch coat, primer, waterproofing, and drainage components where required.
Moisture Management
Exterior assemblies need flashing, weeps, drainage, and properly lapped water-resistive barriers. Cladding is not a substitute for a complete weather-management system.
Movement Joints
Do not bridge structural or control joints with rigid stone finishes. Carry required movement joints through the cladding. Sealants and backer rods should be estimated separately.
Thermal Conditions
Temperature affects adhesive cure and mortar hydration. Hot, cold, windy, or wet weather can reduce productivity and increase protection costs.

Arches

Scaffolding
