Use actual installed coverage. Verify cap width, wall width, overhang, packaging, minimum radius, specialty units, and supplier minimums.

Planning a reliable capstone takeoff
A reliable retaining wall capstone estimate starts with section-by-section field measurements. Straight runs are usually simple, but curves, steps, columns, corners, openings, wall ends, and changing elevations can alter material quantities and cutting time. Measure the finished top course whenever possible because plan dimensions may differ after batter, corner construction, field trimming, and alignment adjustments.
Installed coverage is the most important product value. A unit sold as twelve inches long may cover less after joints, overlaps, alternating placement, or irregular edges. Manufacturer information may list nominal size, actual size, pieces per package, packages per pallet, and minimum curve radius. Use the measurement that represents completed linear coverage. Natural stone and random-length coping normally require a higher waste allowance because pieces must be sorted and fitted.
Curved sections deserve extra attention. The front, back, and centerline arcs have different lengths. A radius below the approved minimum can create wide joints, excessive cutting, poor bearing, and an uneven appearance. Tapered caps may reduce cuts, while rectangular caps commonly require wedge cuts. Direct arc length can be entered when it has been measured on site; otherwise use radius and angle. A full circle uses 360 degrees, and a semicircle uses 180 degrees.
Count dedicated corner, end, and column caps separately when they have different prices. Deduct specialty coverage only when those pieces physically replace regular caps. Add spare units for breakage, color matching, field cuts, future repairs, and shipping damage. Purchasing rules can significantly affect the final quantity because a supplier may sell only complete packages or pallets. Mixed purchasing models full pallets, then packages, then loose units.
Labor depends on product weight, access, staging, adhesive preparation, cutting, cleaning, surface condition, scaffold needs, and cure requirements.
