Frequently asked questions
What spacing should I use for furring channels?
Spacing depends on board thickness, loading, orientation, and the tested ceiling system. Common layouts include 300, 400, 450, or 600 millimetres. Use the manufacturer’s published ceiling specification before installation.
Which channel direction uses less material?
The automatic option calculates both possible directions. It first compares required stock pieces, then linear demand. The recommendation may change when stock lengths or offsets change.
How are openings deducted?
Large openings are entered as excluded area. The calculator reduces channel length proportionally across the section. Exact framing around openings must still be detailed separately.
Does the calculator include splices?
Yes, it estimates pieces per channel run. Each additional piece creates one estimated splice joint. The selected overlap length is included in required material.
Are perimeter channels included?
You can include both perimeter-edge channel rows. Perimeter trim is calculated separately around each rectangular section. Custom bulkhead returns may require additional measured trim.
How are hangers calculated?
Hangers are estimated along each main-channel run. The count uses the selected hanger spacing plus end support. Confirm maximum hanger spacing for the installed system.
Can I calculate several rooms together?
Yes, add separate ceiling sections for rooms or zones. Each section can have different dimensions, quantities, slopes, and exclusions. The calculator combines them into one material schedule.
What waste percentage should I allow?
Simple rooms may need five to ten percent. Irregular layouts, many joints, and limited stock lengths need more. Always consider handling damage and future replacement pieces.
Does the price estimate include labour?
Yes, labour is calculated from net ceiling area. Material, tax, and delivery costs are shown separately. Replace the example rates with current supplier and contractor prices.
Can the result replace a ceiling design?
No, the result is an estimating aid. It does not verify structural capacity, fire resistance, acoustics, or seismic restraint. Obtain professional approval where regulations or project conditions require it.
