Formula used
Adjusted distance = ((main distance × trip multiplier) + local distance) × trips × (1 + detour percentage)
Adjusted MPG = base MPG × (1 − combined efficiency penalties)
Trip fuel = adjusted distance ÷ adjusted MPG + idling fuel
Fuel purchase = trip fuel + required return fuel − starting fuel
For metric economy, the calculator converts liters per 100 kilometers into MPG internally. It also converts prices per liter into prices per gallon before calculating cost. Final fuel results can still appear in gallons or liters.

Planning fuel for a moving truck
A moving-truck fuel estimate should include more than route mileage. Large vehicles respond strongly to payload, speed, traffic, wind, hills, and towing. Starting with an editable MPG value keeps the estimate practical.
Distance can increase after loading, collecting supplies, visiting storage, or missing an exit. A detour allowance adds a controlled buffer without hiding the original route. Multiple trips and round trips should also be counted.
Payload changes how hard the engine works during acceleration and climbing. Towing adds rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag. The calculator applies separate penalties so users can model each condition transparently.
City driving usually increases fuel use through repeated stops and lower gears. Highway driving can be more efficient, although high speed may reduce that advantage. The city and highway percentages create a blended estimate.
Idling matters during loading, traffic queues, inspections, and climate control. The idling rate remains editable because engine size and operating conditions differ. Long idle periods can noticeably change total fuel needs.
The purchase estimate considers fuel already in the tank and the level required at return. This is different from total trip fuel. A driver may burn substantial fuel yet purchase less when the starting tank is full.
Fuel-stop estimates use most, rather than all, of the tank capacity. That approach preserves a planning reserve. Drivers should refuel earlier when stations are sparse or when weather creates uncertainty.
Best-case and worst-case results show how sensitive the budget is. They are not promises. They help users reserve extra money and avoid relying on one exact number.
Compare routes carefully because a shorter route may include steeper terrain or more congestion. Use the alternate-route field to compare distance-based cost under the same efficiency assumptions. Adjust inputs when route conditions differ significantly.

How does cargo load affect the result?
The cargo percentage scales the full-load penalty. A half-loaded truck receives half of the entered full-load MPG reduction.
Can I calculate a round trip?
Yes. Choose round trip, and the main route distance is doubled before local mileage, trip count, and detour allowance are applied.
Can I use kilometers and liters?
Yes. Distance, fuel output, economy format, and fuel-price basis can be changed independently. The calculator performs the required internal conversions.
Why is fuel to purchase different from fuel required?
Total fuel required describes consumption. Fuel to purchase also considers the starting tank level and the amount that must remain when returning the truck.
How are fuel stops estimated?
The calculator assumes about ninety percent of the tank is usable between planned stops. This leaves a modest operating reserve.
What does custom efficiency correction mean?
It lets you add another MPG penalty or improvement. Enter a positive percentage for worse efficiency and a negative percentage for better efficiency.
Does the premium comparison mean premium fuel is required?
No. It only compares costs using the second price. Follow the assigned vehicle’s fuel requirement and rental instructions.
